Seoul City has announced a large-scale initiative to reshape Namdaemun Market, the country’s oldest traditional market with a 600-year history, into a “Global Heritage Traditional Market” that blends historical character with modern urban functions.

On the 17th, the city presented its Namdaemun Market Innovation Project, outlining six key areas of improvement: creating new public spaces, enhancing walkability, improving accessibility, and expanding visitor convenience.

The first completed project, the new Design Arcade, was officially unveiled the same day, marking the beginning of the market’s long-term transformation.

At the heart of the plan is a redesigned central street where a newly built arcade shaped after a hanok-style roof highlights the market’s identity while offering a more comfortable environment for shoppers.

The structure uses a membrane-style roof to improve light, ventilation, and noise conditions while also reinforcing safety against fires, disasters, and typhoons.

The city will also convert an old waste transfer area into an open entry plaza, creating a symbolic “gateway” into the market. Additional improvements include building “emotional-style streets” to create a more inviting atmosphere, upgrading outdated signage, and improving the overall pedestrian experience.

Walkability around the market will be significantly expanded. The city will construct a new Sungnyemun Viewing Path, widening sidewalks and adding a two-level pedestrian deck that allows visitors to view the historic Sungnyemun Gate more comfortably.

New connections will also be created between Namdaemun Market and Namsan through a redesigned Namsan trail and an elevated walkway offering rest areas and city views.

Elevators will be installed to assist seniors, parents with strollers, and others who may have difficulty navigating steep routes.
