Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival takes Aug. 12-16

One of Korea’s longest-running historical festivals returns this week as the 65th Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival takes place across Tongyeong from August 12–16.

Held in honor of Admiral Yi Sun-sin and the 1592 Battle of Hansan, this year’s festival carries the theme “The Admiral’s Sea, the Tears of the War Diary,” highlighting the famed naval commander’s personal reflections and leadership recorded in the Nanjung Ilgi (War Diary).

Festival events will be centered around Gangguan Cultural Plaza and Hansan Battle Square, opening with a traditional memorial ceremony, military procession, opening performances, and a fireworks display over the waterfront.

The highlight of the festival is the Battle of Hansan reenactment, where more than 100 vessels recreate Admiral Yi’s famous Crane Wing Formation in the waters off Hansando Island. A new addition this year is a ceremonial welcome marking the return of the legendary Turtle Ship.

Visitors can also enjoy military performances by the Navy Band and Honor Guard, the Black Eagles aerobatic team, concerts, traditional music and dance performances, original musicals, and 44 hands-on experience booths featuring activities inspired by the Joseon navy.

The festival also includes history lectures and seminars exploring Admiral Yi’s life and leadership, while expanded evening programming features the Tonight Tongyeong EDM Party and one of Gyeongnam’s largest maritime fireworks displays.

First held in 1962, the Tongyeong Hansan Battle Festival commemorates one of the most significant naval victories of the Imjin War and remains one of Korea’s premier historical and cultural festivals.
