Korea Destinations: New pedestrian bridge connects two scenic islands in Tongyeong

A new pedestrian bridge connecting Songdo and Hakrimdo has officially opened in Tongyeong, creating a new coastal walking route and improving access for island residents.

The 170-meter Songdo–Hakrimdo Pedestrian Bridge, along with a 254-meter access road, was built as part of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s island development plan at a cost of 16.2 billion won.

The bridge is open to pedestrians only, allowing visitors to walk between the two islands while enjoying panoramic views of Tongyeong’s coastline and the South Sea.

For local residents, the bridge provides safe, 24-hour access between the islands without relying solely on boats.

City officials also expect it to become a new attraction for hikers and visitors exploring Tongyeong’s island network.

Hakrimdo is known for its coastal scenery and hands-on fishing village experiences, including clam digging.

The new bridge is Tongyeong’s third island-to-island pedestrian bridge, following the Yeondae-Manji Suspension Bridge, which opened in 2015, and the Yeonhwado-Udo Pedestrian Bridge, completed in 2018

Both have become popular destinations for weekend visitors.
