Ulsan in South Korea to offer 1,000 free umbrellas to help residents beat the summer heat

Ulsan City is launching a public umbrella-sharing program this summer to help protect residents from extreme heat and reduce the risk of heat-related illnesses.
The initiative will place 1,000 umbrellas at 13 popular outdoor locations, including Ulsan Grand Park and the Taehwagang National Garden, where visitors can borrow them free of charge and return them after use.
The program will run from June through September as temperatures rise across the region. City officials noted that umbrellas can lower perceived temperatures by blocking direct sunlight, making outdoor activities more comfortable during heatwaves.
The shared umbrellas will be available at parks and major tourist sites throughout the city. Ulsan plans to regularly inspect the umbrellas, replenish supplies when needed, and provide on-site guidance to encourage proper use and reduce loss or damage.
The city is also promoting the campaign with the slogan, “Use It Briefly, Return It Properly,” encouraging residents and visitors to voluntarily return umbrellas after use so others can benefit from the service.
