The V-Day Seoul Project will be staging performances of Eve Ensler’s The Vagina Monologues on March 25 and 26 with proceeds of the show to benefit the Korea Sexual Violence Relief Center. The readings are in coordination with the international V-Day movement to fight violence against women and girls.

The Seoul project brings together a group of Korean and foreign women from various backgrounds to perform the readings. The shows will be presented in English and Korean. The Vagina Monologues, written by V-Day founder and playwright Eve Ensler, is based on interviews with over 200 women. The piece celebrates women’s sexuality and strength, according to organizers.

“Globally, one in three women will be raped, physically beaten, coerced into sex or otherwise abused in her lifetime,” the organizers said in a press release. “In Korea, there is a stigma for women who have been assaulted and these women are often discouraged from pressing charges or sharing their stories.”

They added that they believe these women matter and they hope to create a space where they can talk about violence, sexuality and women’s bodies without shame. It’s through sharing stories that bridges can be built and solutions found. The organizers encourage both men and women to attend.

KSVRC, the shows’ beneficiary, was founded in 1991 and works to help women who are victims of sexual violence in Korea through shelters, counseling, legal advocacy, policy reform and public education.

The event will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on March 25 and 4 p.m. on March 26 at G-15 Sonnendeck in Itaewon. Each reading will run approximately 90 minutes. Tickets are 15,000 won at the door or 10,000 won in advance on www.entcrowd.com. They include entry and one free drink. Saturday night’s ticket also includes free entry to the after party immediately following the performance.

An additional fundraiser event will take place on March 19 at Hidden Cellar in Haebangcheon from 7-10 p.m. The event will include musical entertainment, drink specials and raffle prizes from various local businesses including Body & Seoul, Magpie Brewing Company, A Pie Story and many more. The proceeds will go towards funding the V-Day Seoul 2017 performance.
