OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- The 51st Communications Squadron hosted an open house event to showcase their daily operations to the public, at Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, October 1, 2021. The event was open to anyone interested in attending and learning more about the 51st CS.

The mission of the 51st CS is to enable 7th Air Force air operations and 51st Fighter Wing base support and quality of life functions by providing reliable and responsive communications services. Furthermore, 51st FW flying mission, supported by the 51st CS, is to defend the base, execute contingency operations and sustain the force.

“Our goal for this event was to make sure the public knows what our squadron does on a day to day basis,” said 2nd Lt. Yu Jin Kim, 51st CS officer-in-charge of the projects and requirements team. “Communications touches everything we do here.”

The open house was a self-guided walkthrough of the CS facilities, including locations previously closed to the public. To make this possible, CS members worked to ensure any classified and unauthorized information was sanitized from the walkthrough.

“It’s extremely important to make sure communications are always functional peninsula wide, because in this day and age, everything goes through us,” said Kim. “I think it’s pretty critical to understand how the CS fits into our posture to ‘fight tonight’ here at Osan. That’s what we wanted to showcase today.”

Attendees were able to participate in activities such as digital capture the flag, computer building and cable-making. They were also able to hear directly from CS Airmen themselves about the duties and responsibilities they perform daily.

“We love doing these kinds of things and would love to provide this opportunity again sometime in the future,” said Kim. “It’s great to be able to give our community the kind of outreach we can give through events like these.”
