CAMP WALKER, Republic of Korea — U.S. Army Garrison Daegu's Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) team kicked off the summer season with multiple fitness offerings for the USAG Daegu community, including the the grand re-opening of the Camp Carroll Outdoor Pool and an athletic event—the Murph Challenge.
The Murph Challenge is the official annual fundraiser of the Lt. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation and consists of a strenuous workout: a 1-mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats and an additional 1-mile run in a 20 lb. vest or body armor. Non-competitive participants can refrain from the additional weight.

This year USAG Daegu hosted a Community Murph June 4. In addition to the Murph Challenge, FMWR included a Lil' Murph event to help make the event a family affair. Designed for children ages 5-11, the Lil' Murph drew nearly 100 kids to Kelly Field for a scaled-down, noncompetitive version of the Murph Challenge.

The beginning of the summer also ushered in new sports, recreation and fitness options for the USAG Daegu community.
The Camp Carroll pool opened Memorial Day Weekend, giving local residents the chance to see improvements made to the recreation facility since the last summer season. In addition to brand-new furniture at the pool, the FMWR staff has been working on a new park area for residents to relax.
"We've got beautiful seating, a brand-new deck, a grilling area and a nice bit of land for anybody who wants to bring out their lawn games or use as a picnic area," said FMWR Aquatic Program Manager Jacob Goulette.
The Daegu Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation team is busy working on upgrades to the fitness centers at Camp Carroll and Camp Henry. Both facilities will be outfitted with new fitness equipment in the coming months to provide expanded workout options for the USAG Daegu community. These new updates will be similar to the facility offerings at Camp Walker's renovated Kelly Fitness Center.
