USO Humphreys is dedicated to fulfilling the needs and interests of servicemembers and their families. Due to the rapidity of the CDC declaring COVID a pandemic at the onset of 2020, the USAG-Humphreys community was suddenly thrust into adapting to a new normal. Service-members and families transitioned from “the normal” to teleworking, virtual learning, and social distancing requirements. The significance of the community impact challenged USO Humphreys staff and volunteers with adapting to the new needs of “USAG-Humphreys Family” by creating innovative ways for our patrons to stay connected.
So, what a relief it was when 2021 arrived with approved vaccinations and the hope of reverting back to a more permissive environment. As the USO Humphreys staff and volunteers discussed programming, the “U”ltimate “S”pring “O”verhaul evolved. The “USO” was a 90-day fitness challenge that encouraged those that participated to foster better eating habits and incorporate fitness into their daily routines. It was a hybrid program, which means we met in person on Tuesdays and Thursdays, but the other days the onus was on the individual to workout separately.
The weekly sessions were held on Balboni Field to encourage all to enjoy the outdoors, and to take advantage of HPCON B and less limitations on gatherings.
A USO Humphreys staff or volunteer led the workouts with USO provided workout equipment: free weights, kettle bells, and jump ropes. The great thing about the program that many parents appreciated was that we also included children in our Tuesday/Thursday workout sessions. The USO also provided soccer balls, jump ropes, frisbees, and corn hole games for the kids. The intent was for everyone to release endorphins while building relationships to strengthen our minds, bodies, and community. The challenge started on 1 March and culminated on 20 March with bragging rights for all.
Remember the USO is always by your side and we help connect Service & Family Members to home, family, and country every day.
