In celebration of the 80th anniversary of Korea’s liberation, the Busan Museum of Modern and Contemporary History will run a special summer program for children titled “Ambiguous August 15” from August 12 to 17.
The educational program is part of the museum’s annual vacation initiative, “Cool Mu-kangs”—a compound of “museum” and “vacation”—designed to offer elementary school students meaningful historical learning during their summer break.
This year’s theme, marking eight decades since Korea’s liberation, invites children to explore the significance of August 15 through a series of engaging and age-appropriate activities. Each session includes three key components:
Understanding Liberation Day through interactive lessons that explain its historical background and the evolution of its terminology—such as “liberation,” “independence,” and “restoration.” Students will also explore how other countries commemorate similar milestones.
Creative Mind Mapping, allowing children to visualize and express what August 15 means to them personally, using both words and illustrations.
A hands-on craft session where participants will make their own Korean bead keychain (Biz Keyring), incorporating meaningful words related to Liberation Day.
The program will run twice daily at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., with a limit of 16 participants per session, targeting students in grades 2 through 6.
Reservations open on August 4 at 10 a.m. via the city’s online booking system (reserve.busan.go.kr) on a first-come, first-served basis. Participation is free of charge.
