Busan is expected to face hotter and wetter conditions than usual this summer, prompting strengthened disaster preparedness measures.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, the Bu-Ul-Gyeong region, including Busan, will see above-average temperatures from May to July due to the inflow of hot and humid southwest winds.

Heavy rainfall is also likely at times, exceeding 100mm per hour, driven by atmospheric instability and low-pressure systems.

In response, the government has expanded the number of flood- and landslide-prone areas designated for intensive management.

Nationwide emergency alerts, including disaster text messages and voice notifications for floods and typhoons, will now also cover Busan.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency will operate its heat-related illness surveillance system earlier than usual, from May 15 to September 30, to monitor rising cases of heatstroke and exhaustion.

Busan residents can expect longer periods of heat and stronger rainfall this summer, with wide regional variation.
