On June 25, 1950, North Korean forces, backed by the Soviet Union and China, invaded South Korea and quickly overpowered, occupying Seoul within only three days. On September 15, 1950, General MacArthur led 75,000 UN troops to Incheon for Operation Chromite, a full attack to recapture Seoul. The operation marked a turning point in the Korean War and MacArthur is still remembered as the ultimate hero by Koreans. By Oct. 1950, U.N. forces had nearly fully occupied North Korea. However, with Chinese involvement, the war became a brutal stalemate for nearly three years until the armistice was signed in July 1953. Though reunification wasn’t achieved, the signing of the Mutual Defense Treaty between the U.S. and ROK in Oct. 1953 ensured ongoing protection against North Korean aggression.
