This summer, forget about escaping to the mountains or beaches — Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) is turning into Seoul’s most creative summer destination.
From July 31 to August 3, the 2025 DDP Summer Festival: Design Holiday invites citizens and tourists alike to cool off with an immersive mix of design, play, and urban adventure.
Now in its second season, Design Holiday returns with even more hands-on fun, offering a fresh model for “creative vacationing” in the heart of the city. Hosted by the Seoul Design Foundation, this year’s festival takes inspiration from board games, converting DDP’s indoor and outdoor spaces into interactive playgrounds for all ages.
Upon arrival, visitors will receive a festival guide — paired with jelly treats from Amos Pillars — and be guided along the “Design Trail”, which winds through installations made with upcycled plastic furniture by Roly Poly Collective, outdoor reading lounges, and whimsical play zones.
The event offers more than games — it’s also about sustainable experiences and mindful relaxation. Eco-conscious food and beverage partners like Pulmuone Earth Diet and Klup Esabi Soda will provide refreshments, and those participating in plastic bottle recycling campaigns can score vegan jelly gifts from KatYes.
A major highlight is the “Uphill Playground,” built along DDP’s gentle slope. This creative space features giant pinball games, block stacking challenges, limbo games, and more — all designed to blend physical activity with imagination. Meanwhile, in the quieter Grass Living Room and Trail Lounge, visitors can join curated design programs, from private self-care sessions to workshops led by creators like Baecia and influencer Bbangneu, who will host a Pilates class on August 1.
For those who thrive in the heat, the festival spills into the outdoors with a lineup of active events. The “DDP Running” series, from August 1–3, offers a unique course that winds through the design trail and water zones, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor fitness. Runners will receive sports towels, sparkling drinks, and may stumble upon surprise giveaways from Odd Socks. On August 3, a light jogging program with Klomp promises a relaxing way to stay fit and refreshed.
Meanwhile, on August 2, the Red Bull Road Gap event will take over Eoullim Plaza. Backed by Red Bull, the high-energy skateboarding showcase will feature pro athletes like former national team member Eun Juwon (Asian Games bronze medalist) and Kang Junyi, turning DDP into a temporary street culture mecca. Red Bull’s brand zone will amplify the experience with fashion, music, and urban flair.
During the same period, “Seoul Light DDP: Summer Edition” — an internationally awarded light art experience — will illuminate landmarks like the Seoul Fortress, Igansumun Gate, and the Dongdaemun History & Culture Park. These night-time displays will reimagine the city’s heritage sites as cultural destinations perfect for family outings and summer dates.
Also returning is “DDP: The Two Faces of Night,” featuring themed night tours and exclusive experiences. Among them is a collaboration with French beauty brand Lenor, offering guided summer tours with special commemorative gifts for participants.
As Seoul continues to push the boundaries of what a city-centered summer can look like, Design Holiday at DDP stands out as a creative retreat for every age group.
From playful installations to urban fitness, eco-conscious treats, and interactive exhibitions, it’s a four-day festival designed to inspire, refresh, and reimagine the possibilities of summertime in the city.
