Dano cake

Dano cake (Seoul Metropolitan Government)

For the first time since its opening, Namsangol Hanok Village in Seoul will host a Dano Festival on Saturday, May 31, celebrating one of Korea’s five traditional holidays.

The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and also feature a traditional Korean wedding reenactment from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m..

Dano (the fifth day of the fifth lunar month) was historically a day for communities to prepare for summer through activities like washing hair in sweet flag water, making herb rice cakes, and gifting fans.

Namsangol will offer a mix of free and paid hands-on programs, including fan-making, mugwort sachets, natural dyeing, and traditional snacks. Craft workshops will reinterpret customs into modern forms, like shampoo bars and mother-of-pearl hairpins.

The traditional wedding performance will follow Confucian-era rituals, offering visitors a rare look into historical matrimonial customs.
