Seoul City announced plans to transform the 690-meter-long, 1,470-square-meter area around the Pungnap Fortress walking trail into a picturesque “Seasonal Flower Path.”

The first phase of the project has already seen the planting of cosmos flowers and 2,876 peony seedlings along the trail at Toseong-ro 2 in Songpa-gu.

By next year, additional seasonal blooms like daffodils, anemones, coreopsis, tulips, portulacas, and chrysanthemums will also be planted, creating a year-round floral spectacle.

The “Seasonal Flower Path” project will extend from the southeast wall of the Pungnap Fortress, covering a 1,500-meter stretch along four designated segments of the eastern wall. The initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance the living environment in Pungnap-dong, which has been negatively impacted by ongoing cultural heritage excavations.

Designated as Historic Site No. 11 in 1963, Pungnap Fortress, a Baekje royal fortress, spans approximately 2,250 meters in circumference, covering a total area of 121,325 square meters.

Numerous Baekje relics have been unearthed here, establishing the site as an essential academic landmark. Once estimated to have been a massive royal fortress with a total length of 3.8 kilometers, it is believed to date back to the early Baekje era and is often compared to other ancient fortresses like the Goguryeo’s Guknae Fortress and the Nangnang Fortress.

Seoul City plans to continue enhancing the Pungnap Fortress trail, transforming it into a historical and scenic destination where visitors can appreciate the rich heritage of the region amidst a beautiful floral setting.
