The Seoul Metropolitan Government is enhancing its Bus Information Terminals (BIT) to improve accessibility, especially for seniors and digital minorities, while ensuring greater convenience and safety for all bus users.
As of 2025, over 5,800 terminals are installed citywide, with about 4,000 directly managed by the city. These displays now include clearer visual updates, such as a bus icon alongside the arrival message to make incoming buses easier to identify.
Public design improvements have also simplified on-screen information. Previously static text has been replaced with scrolling messages, allowing more route numbers to be shown and reducing visual clutter.
In response to feedback from passengers and transit workers, new voice announcements are being introduced to reduce repetitive information while enhancing safety.
These include alerts such as, “A bus is arriving, please take a step back,” and pronunciation updates that align with Korean language standards. The updates are currently being piloted on 20 terminals in central bus lanes and will be rolled out citywide by the end of the year.
To maintain visibility during poor weather, the terminals have been cleaned and treated with water-repellent coatings used on vehicle windshields. This reduces the impact of rain and pollution on screen clarity.
The city says it remains committed to improving transportation accessibility through continued service upgrades focused on user needs.
