The site of former U.S. military base Clark Air Base is now used as a Filipino base, an international airport high-end residences, golf resort and public park. Old military aircraft and artillery are displayed in the park. Established as a U.S. camp after the Spanish-American War in 1898, it was occupied by the Japanese military during World War II. Later, it became the largest U.S. military air base outside the mainland U.S. with a vital link with U.S. forces in South Korea and Southeast Asia. The eruption of Mount Pinatubo near the base covered the facility with volcanic ash and destroyed some of the facility in 1991, which drove the U.S. military to withdraw from the site. The base is about 48 miles north of Manila.
