(Gyeongnam province)
As outdoor activities ramp up during vacation season, it’s crucial to be aware of wasp sting prevention and first aid measures.
Chief Kim Jae-byeong of the Gyeongsangnam-do Fire Department has urged residents to exercise caution as wasp sting incidents rise amid a nationwide heat wave warning issued on the 5th.
Over the past three years (2021 to 2023), the number of bee sting incidents in Gyeongnam peaked during the summer months: 547 cases in July, 751 in August, and 708 in September.
This period, from July to September, accounted for 2,006 incidents, or 79% of the total 2,537 cases reported.
The increase in wasp sting incidents is attributed to bees building hives from May to July and becoming more active during their breeding season in August.
This coincides with a rise in vacations and outdoor activities, leading to more interactions between bees and people.
Recent incidents highlight the risks: On the 26th of last month, a man in his 70s in Dongbu-myeon, Geoje-si, was stung multiple times, resulting in itchiness and shortness of breath.
On the 4th, in Burim-myeon, Uiryeong-gun, a man in his 50s was stung on the finger, causing dizziness and vomiting, and required hospitalization.
If stung by a bee, promptly remove the stinger, disinfect the area to prevent infection, wash it with clean water, and apply an ice pack. If symptoms persist, seek immediate medical attention or call 119 for emergency assistance.
To reduce the risk of bee stings, avoid wearing dark-colored clothing and strong perfumes or scents, as bees are attracted to them. Opt for white clothing and a wide-brimmed hat, and refrain from using perfume when spending time outdoors.
