Namcheon Kalguksu, which has been serving up delicious meals since its launch, is about 100 meters from Geumnyensan Subway Station gate 5. It used to be at a different location, but now it is settled in its own small building with space for parking.
Like many traditional restaurants, you need to take off your shoes when you enter this house-remodeled restaurant. It is a cozy and well-organized restaurant run by a local family for more than ten years.
We ordered Beef and Mushroom Kalguksu, their signature dish for two and two rolls of ueong gimbap, or burdock gimbap, which is known for its holistic benefits.
You can choose sunhanmat, their non-spicy version of their Beef Mushroom Kalguksu for 8,500 per portion, or maeunmat, their spicier option for 9,500 won per portion and the order must be at least for two. They make their noodles using turmeric, which is known to reduce the inflammation associated with obesity.
Soon after we ordered, we were served a pot of kalguksu that came with a timer set for three minutes, which tells you when your meal is ready for you to eat once it begins to be cooked on the table in front of you.
There were plenty of mushrooms, beef, and bean sprouts with a bit of seafood, which came with about almost half of the ingredients in the pot. The hot, thick and healthy soup really harmonizes with the soaked, chewy noodles which have abundant flavor when piping hot.
The ueong gimbap, which I ordered as a highly recommended side dish, was a great accompaniment to balance the hot kalguksu.
When we almost finished our meal, one worker came over and prepared juk, a Korean rice porridge, with the leftover soup and it was a great way to end the gratifying meal.
There are several more kalguksu options from 5,500 won to 7,000 won to choose from as well as gimbap from 2,500 won to 4,000 won. They also serve a few kinds of bibimbap from 6,000 won to 7,000 won. Soju or beer is available for 4,000 won.
Many locals and workers around come around noon so it would be better to avoid lunchtime. There is a small parking lot for around four cars.
It’s a great place for a quick, affordable meal near the beach the next time you are in Gwangalli and are looking to get your kalguksu fix.
