In Korea, kkaennip (or perilla leaves) are popular ingredients to make Korean dishes and it is also usually served as a side dish that goes with rice. You can easily find fresh vegetables including perilla leaves at Korean BBQ restaurants. It is served to make a lettuce wrap called ssam. Ssam means the method of wrapping barbecue meat and other side dishes in leafy greens. The perilla leaves have aromatic fragrances and are also made as banchan called “kkaennip jangajji” by pickling them in soy sauce.
