The cost of preparing a Chuseok ancestral rite table has risen by approximately 9% compared to last year, according to a recent analysis by the Korea Price Association.

The association, which surveyed the prices of 28 traditional rite items in markets across 17 cities and provinces as of August 22nd, announced that the average cost for a family of four is now 287,100 won.

This marks a 9.1% increase from last year’s Chuseok and a significant 44.6% rise from a decade ago when the cost was 198,610 won.

Out of the 28 items surveyed, 23 saw price increases, while only five experienced a decrease.

Notable items with significant price hikes include doraji (balloon flower root), bracken, dried persimmons, jujubes, chestnuts, and pears, all of which have surged by over 20% compared to last year.

Chinese doraji, in particular, saw the steepest rise, with prices soaring by 52%.

Seafood prices increased by 11.9%, while traditional snacks like yakgwa and yukgwa saw price increases of 17.2% and 21.3%, respectively.
