Bito Island

(Sacheon City)

Gyeongnam province has announced 14 destinations selected as part of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety’s annual “Islands to Visit” campaign for 2025.

The list highlights islands rich in natural beauty, cultural heritage, and local food, offering diverse experiences for travelers looking to explore beyond the mainland.

This year, 14 islands in the province were selected out of 88 nationwide, including destinations in Changwon, Geoje, Sacheon, Hadong, and Tongyeong.

Changwon – Udo

Once called “Butterfly Island,” Udo is easily accessible via a pedestrian bridge from Jinhae Marine Park. It’s known for its laid-back atmosphere and opportunities for marine leisure activities.

Geoje – Isudo & Chilcheondo

Isudo offers sweeping views of Geoga Bridge and even Tsushima Island on clear days. Chilcheondo, a land-connected island, is popular for scenic drives and features multiple suspension bridges connecting it to nearby islets.

Sacheon – Sinsudo & Bitodo

Sinsudo, dubbed the “Island Where the Gods Live,” is known for its serene walking trails and sea views. Nearby Bitodo, featured in the classic tale Byeoljubujeon, is popular with families for its fishing park and ocean-themed activities.

Hadong – Daedo

Daedo comprises one main island and several uninhabited islets. With its connection to Southern writers and designation as a fishing village experience destination, it’s ideal for families seeking a mix of nature and cultural heritage.

Tongyeong – 8 Island Gems

Tongyeong dominates the list with eight featured islands:

Yokjido: Ideal for sunrise and sunset views, with coastal paths and fresh seafood.

Hansando: Rich in history, home to the Battle of Hansando site and Jeseungdang.

Bijindo: Known for its white sand beaches and lively summer scene.

Yeonhwado: Famous for hydrangeas in full bloom each summer and the scenic Yeonhwasa Temple.

Yeondaedo: A model of sustainable island development, connected to Manjido by bridge.

Daemaemuldo: A backpacking favorite with trails and striking island scenery.

Chudo: Home to a 500-year-old zelkova tree and an annual island film festival.

Saryangdo: Popular with hikers for its rugged trails, suspension bridges, and mountaintop views.

In celebration of the 2025 campaign, the Ministry is hosting a nationwide island travel challenge until August 24. Participants can log visits through the “Walk On” app and social media to win prizes through a raffle.

Gyeongnam Province plans to develop customized travel products for each island while improving infrastructure and convenience facilities. Officials also aim to collaborate with island residents to support sustainable tourism and local revitalization.

For travelers seeking quiet coastal escapes or new cultural discoveries, these 14 islands offer a fresh look at the diversity of Gyeongnam’s maritime charm.
