The government declared Armed Forces Day on October 1 a temporary holiday this year to enhance troop morale and boost domestic spending.

The decision, approved during a Cabinet meeting, will be forwarded to President Yoon Suk Yeol for final approval.

As requested by the ruling People Power Party, this designation adds to the existing October public holidays — National Foundation Day on October 3 and Hangeul Day on October 9.

This is the first time Armed Forces Day will be observed as a public holiday since it was removed from the official holiday list in 1991.
