A QR code ticket system will be introduced on the Busan Metro as the existing paper ticket producers have recently closed related businesses.

The Busan Transportation Corporation will introduce QR code tickets from April.

Unlike existing tickets, the QR ticket introduced can be purchased at the station in the form of a QR code printed on thermal paper. The Korea Transportation Corporation is also promoting the introduction of a ‘smartphone QR ticket’ with the goal of mid- to late-year.

The recent sharp decline in the use of paper tickets is the reason for promoting the introduction of smartphone QR tickets.

The percentage of paper tickets used, which was 6.4% in 2017, fell to 3.8% last year.

Currently, Busan is the only place where paper tickets are operated among urban railways nationwide.
