Busan experienced its first tropical night of the year overnight on July 1, marking the earliest occurrence of the phenomenon in 111 years, according to the Busan Meteorological Administration.
The lowest overnight temperature recorded at the city’s main observation point in Daecheong-dong, Jung-gu was 25.9°C, surpassing the threshold for a tropical night, when temperatures stay above 25°C from 6:01 pm to 9:00 am the next day.
This year’s tropical night arrived 19 days earlier than last year’s (July 20, 2024), breaking a record that dates back to 1914.
Tropical nights are considered a key indicator of heat stress, as such temperatures often disrupt sleep and pose health risks, especially for vulnerable populations.
With a heat wave warning still in effect across Busan, daytime temperatures on July 2 peaked at 31°C, and meteorologists expect the intense heat to persist in the coming days.
