KOREA

()

Thanks to military-only taxis, getting around US bases in Korea is easy. Off-base, however, it’s a different story. Catching a cab can be a competitive sport, especially late at night. Problems also arise when you’re in unfamiliar areas because you might not know where to go to find one. And many of you are concerned about getting ripped off and overcharged by cabbies trying to take advantage of the language barrier. Trying to take a taxi shouldn’t be a source of stress, especially if you have the KakaoT app in hand.

The app features other functions worth exploring like carpooling, parking and more, but the KakaoTaxi portion is what will come in handy when you need a taxi ASAP. The app uses GPS to find your location and after inputting your destination, it displays the type of taxis available, exact fare and arrival time. Two of the most common taxis are available: medium and large size. KakaoT also offers deluxe taxis if you’re after VIP treatment.

The medium taxi refers to the general taxi (ilban in Korean), with fares starting at 4,800 won. For big groups or families, a large taxi can accommodate between 6 to 13 passengers with a van, and fares start at 7,000 won.

Fares change at night between 10 p.m. and 4 a.m., with an additional charge of 1,000-2,000 won. Additionally, you can book a taxi in advance through the app.

How to use KakaoT

1. Download the mobile app.

Note: A KakaoTalk ID is required to use the app.

2. Select “Taxi” on the main page and set a starting point and destination. Make sure to adjust the accurate point by moving the taxi icon with your finger on the screen.

3. The app will then display taxi options (General, Venti, and Black) along with the estimated price for your trip. Choose the desired taxi option.

4. In the payment section, select “Pay to the driver” if it’s convenient for you.

5. After completing the taxi order, the app will connect you with a driver in your vicinity and display the estimated arrival time of the taxi you ordered.

6. Cancellation is available, but a 2,000 won fee will be charged if you cancel a minute after the vehicle is dispatched.
