Mulgeonbangjo Eoburim in Samdong-myeon, Namhae-gun, has been selected as one of the “50 Beautiful Urban Forests” by the Korea Forest Service.
In April, the Korea Forest Service received recommendations for 916 beautiful urban forests from local governments and the public. After evaluating accessibility, ecological health, usage levels, landscape value, distinctiveness, and public preferences, they selected 50 urban forests.
These 50 urban forests are categorized based on their roles and functions into five types: Climate Change Response, Economic Effect Enhancement, Landscape Improvement, Resident Health Enhancement, and Resident Participation.
Mulgeonbangjo Eoburim was chosen as a “Resident Participation Forest” due to its historical significance in forest creation.
Designated as Natural Monument No. 150 in 1962, Mulgeonbangjo Eoburim is a forest planted 400 years ago by villagers to protect their village from strong sea winds and waves. With over 10,000 trees, including large zelkova trees and small shrubs, it feels like a journey deep into the mountains.
Mulgeonbangjo Eoburim has previously received recognition, winning the “Beautiful Forest National Competition Excellence Award” in 2002 and being acknowledged as a “Well-maintained Natural and Cultural Heritage” in 2006.
