(Busan Maru International Music Festival)

Busan’s largest music event, the 15th Busan Maru International Music Festival (BMIMF), will take place throughout the city from September 3 to 25.

This year’s festival, themed “Classics on the Breeze,” aims to blend the emotional power of classical music with the serene beauty of Busan’s natural landscapes.

The festival will span 22 days, with performances at various venues, including the Busan Cultural Center, Busan Citizens’ Hall, Geumjeong Cultural Center, and Busan Cinema Center.

The opening concert, titled “Main Concert I,” is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on September 3 at the Busan Cultural Center.

The concert will feature the BMIMF Festival Orchestra under the baton of Professor Jan Milos Zarzycki from the Chopin Conservatory of Music, with a special performance by Brandon Riedner, a professor at the Juilliard School, on the flugelhorn.

The program will include Beethoven’s Coriolan Overture, Op. 62, Mozart’s Flute Concerto No. 2 in D Major, and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5 in E Minor, Op. 64.

The festival offers a rich and diverse program, including:

Main Concert Series (Sept 3-13): Large-scale performances featuring prominent artists.

Ensemble Concerts (Sept 5-25): Intimate performances by chamber music groups, string quartets, and quintets.

Promenade Concerts (Sept 6-12): Featuring experimental and genre-crossing music.

Busan International Video and Music Festival (Sept 14-15): A unique experience combining video and music.

Busan Musician Series (Sept 5-7): Showcasing the talents of local Busan artists.

A new highlight this year is the Fringe Concert, co-hosted with the Busan Small Performance Hall Association, featuring local performers.

In addition, the festival will celebrate the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba by including Cuban artists in the lineup.

Performers from Japan, Mexico, China, and other countries will also grace the stage. The festival will continue its commitment to nurturing young talent through the Dream Project, focused on developing the next generation of orchestras, and the Busan Musician Series for local musicians.
