In Korea, people’s fuel is generally rice, but nowadays, Gen Z is so passionate about bread that they even go on bakery pilgrimages (“ppangjisullye,” — a portmanteau of ppang meaning bread and seongjisullye meaning pilgrimage). Bread is considered more of a dessert to accompany coffee than a meal, so it has a soft texture and a pronounced sweet flavor. Let’s experience the unique charm of K-desserts at the famous bakeries that even idols have visited.
Peterpan 1978 is a beloved bakery that has been a local staple near Yonsei University since 1978. It is so popular that it was even selected for Korea’s restaurant guide, the Blue Ribbon Survey. BLACKPINK’s Jennie also visited here while filming her own content about “ppangjisullye,” making headlines. Its signature items include Baby Buttocks and salted butter rolls. Baby Buttocks are particularly famous for their soft dough filled with smooth cream cheese, offering a perfectly balanced taste. After picking up your favorite bread, it’s recommended to head to Gyeongui Line Forest Park to enjoy the sunny day while savoring your treat.

Samsong Bakery in Daegu is a renowned regional bakery that has been loved for many years, much like Sungsimdang in Daejeon and Leesungdang in Gunsan. Founded in 1957, it has grown to open numerous branches and is known for developing its own unique recipes, such as being the first in Korea to introduce oven-baked croquettes. Even f(x)‘s Krystal was seen purchasing bread from this bakery after a fan signing event in Daegu, which was featured on the reality show “Jessica & Krystal.” She quickly devoured the signature items, flaked corn bread and oven-baked croquettes, and expressed her delight, saying, “So delicious!”

Sungsimdang is a bakery that has gained national recognition beyond its base in Daejeon. As more people visit the city specifically to try its bread, the city’s image has shifted from “Expo” to “bread.” An Yu-jin from IVE, who is from Daejeon, named Sungsimdang as one of the city’s prides on the show “Earth Arcade,” and she was also seen enjoying a bread shopping spree here on IVE’s own content, “IVE ON.” Recently, NCT127 and NMIXX also visited the bakery. The most famous items include deep-fried Korean streusel with red bean paste filling and chive bun, so be sure to try them.
