Recently opened at the beginning of May, Chaophraya Thai Food is the city’s newest restaurant catering to foodies from the Land of Smiles.
Located next to exit 1 on line 2 at Gwangan Station, this no-frills Thai place hits the spot with a small menu to choose from, but packed with great taste.
My party ordered four items — a shrimp Pad Thai, green curry chicken, shrimp fried rice and stir fried pork with basil. All were delicious, though the green curry was a bit watery than I’m used to. The shrimp fried rice came with a yellow curry that was quite addictive however, there were only two shrimp in the rice. The Pad Thai was fantastic and the fried pork with basil offered a delicious blend of flavors.
Dishes are served individually, so it’s good to share food if you’re in a larger party and especially if your food is cooked later in the service.
Classic Thai fare is on the menu — Tom Yum Goong, Pad Thai, Fried rice, Papaya Salad and Fried Crab — though not as spicy as you’d find in Bangkok but just enough kick to leave you satisfied. For those who like their Thai food a little less spicy, it’s just the right amount of flavor.
Prices are very reasonable starting at 7,000 won with most dishes under 10,000 won. The service is relatively quick and staff is friendly and hospitable.
You can also wash down your meal with one of two Thai beers on offer — Singha’s cost 5,000 won for a bottle and Leo is 4,000 won for a can.
Overall, it was a very satisfying meal of which I will return again soon.
Open: Everyday for now, the owner says from next month they may change their hours
How to get there: Subway line 2 to Gwangan Station. Exit 1 and turn around when you leave the subway exit. It’s on your immediate left next to Ediya Coffee.
