Armed Forces Day is celebrated Oct. 1 in South Korea to commemorate the development of the ROK Armed Forces. The date was chosen to mark the day when the ROK 3rd Infantry Division broke through the 38th parallel against the North Korean forces during the Korean War.
This year, Armed Forces Day was recognized as a temporary public holiday to raise awareness of national security and express gratitude for the dedication of ROK troops.
The highlight of the celebrations was the large-scale military parade organized by the Ministry of National Defense. Held in downtown Seoul on Oct.1, the parade featured ROK troops from diverse branches and advanced weaponry, including the Hyunmoo-5 ballistic missile. The aerial display by the Black Eagles and AH-64 helicopters further enhanced the ground parade.
The Cultural Immersion Program hosted by Combined Forces Command (CFC) offered U.S. military community members the special opportunity to join in the parade. “Watching the Armed Forces Day parade made me even more impressed by the outstanding military capabilities and high morale of the ROK Armed Forces,” one participant commented.
The Cultural Immersion Program is a tour program designed to enhance the understanding of Korea’s security, history, and culture for United States Forces Korea and United Nations Command personnel and their families. This year’s program successfully concluded with visits to six regions of Korea, including Jeju Island. For those interested in participating in the parade next year, joining Cultural Immersion Program can be a great option.
