(Seoul Metropolitan Government)
The Seoul Metropolitan Government is offering eco-friendly weddings at World Cup Park through the ‘Saerok Wedding’ program, running from March to November.
This initiative encourages sustainable wedding practices by minimizing disposable wedding supplies and promoting public transportation for guests.
The term ‘Saerok Wedding’ derives from the Korean word ‘saeroksaerok,’ meaning something new emerging, symbolizing the union of two people in marriage. Additionally, ‘rok’ refers to the green hues of nature, emphasizing the program’s eco-friendly approach.
The weddings held at World Cup Park focus on reducing environmental impact, from planning to execution.
Since its inception in 2015, 96 couples have participated in this program, each designing their own unique and creative ceremonies.
Unlike conventional outdoor weddings, Saerok Weddings discourage the use of single-use decorations and invitations.
Instead, couples are encouraged to use digital or recycled paper invitations, reusable tableware for receptions, and offer plant-based or non-heated meals.
Guests are also encouraged to use public transportation to reduce their carbon footprint.
In 2024, a total of 13 couples celebrated their weddings at World Cup Park, incorporating various eco-conscious practices such as mobile invitations and sustainable catering.
Some even opted for vegan meal options or contributed to tree-planting funds to offset the carbon emissions associated with their ceremonies.
Additionally, couples have the flexibility to design their own weddings, allowing for personalized and meaningful experiences.
