Inje, where the 12th Army Division is located, has long had a strong image of being a "tough place" among soldiers due to its rugged terrain and constantly changing climate. The road leading to the Unit Battalion on the Ascending Road was also treacherous. The isolated base situated there gave the impression that it was cut off from the outside world.
The Song-adal company, one of the base unit, usually uses small tactical vehicles in case of daytime situations. With the introduction of mountain operation vehicles, the time it takes to move to the front-line barbed wire fence has more than halved. Although it used to take at least 30 minutes to move quickly on foot, it now takes about 15 minutes to reach operation point the barbed wire fence.
From the elevated guard post in front of the gate leading to the DMZ, you can easily see the view of the DMZ at a glance. In particular, you can see the site of the battle at Hill 854, where the Korean troops won the final offensive of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army in the late stages of the Korean War, and the guard post (GP) built there.
The Roads to the Sacheon-ri Company were treacherous and dangerous. Even the road pavement was also a recent addition. The Sacheon-ri Comapany is famous for its over 4,000 steps. If you add up the number of steps in the Company's operational area, there are 7,446 steps. There are guard posts located in inaccessible areas where vehicles cannot possibly reach. This is why they became famous for using monorails to transport supplies.
The front-line barbed wire fence inspection course is also a daily routine for the soldiers of the Sacheon-ri Company. Even world-famous mountain climber Um Hong-gil, who visited the place, said, "It's tough."
Captain Jo Jae-hoon who is in chared with unit, explained "Given the nature of the fence inspection that requires a round trip, the number of steps to walk doubles,"
His primary focus is on 'physical strengh'. The soldiers enhance their endurance through daily physical training to overcome the daunting stairs.
The next destination, the Unity Company, is located on Hill 890(890m height). Despite being noon, the Unity Company was shrouded in a thin, milky fog. The soldiers were already used to this kind of weather where they could barely see in front of them. They agreed, saying, "A clear day is actually rare.“
The soldiers of the Unity Company overcome numerous difficulties through a culture of mutual respect and consideration. Private Byeong-ju, who has been in the unit for five months, said, "What helped me the most to shake off the unfamiliar environment and the pressure of the DMZ was none other than my 'fellow soldiers'."
Hyangrobong, which reaches an altitude of 1,296 is regarded as 'identity of the 12th Division'. The journey to Hyangrobong is challenging from the start. Due to the rough unpaved road, winding courses, extreme clouds blocking the visibility, and strong winds it requires many stops to get there. It took over an hour and 30 minutes to reach by car to the advance battalion, which is located just 3 meters below the summit.
The 12th Divison utilize such a treacherous Hyangrobong as a marching ground. Not only trainees and newly commissioned officers but also soldiers of subordinate units periodically climb Hyangrobong to engrave the spirit of the mountain division into their hearts.
Top of Hyangrobong was filled with clouds, just like incense burning on an altar. However, when the strong wind occasionally blew the fog away, a breathtaking view unfolded before our eyes. The view from the summit of Hyangrobong was truly magnificent. The sun, emitting bright light through the strong wind and fog, far beyond the blue sky. It was a sight that could only be seen in this place.

3) ‘육군12사단’ (인제)
육군 12사단이 위치한 인제군은 과거부터 험한 산세와 시시각각 변하는 기후로 장병들 사이에서 ‘힘든 곳’이라는 이미지가 강하다. 상승향로봉여단 단결대대로 향하는 길 역시 험했다. 검문소를 지나 이어진 산길에 덩그러니 자리 잡은 부대는 이곳이 외부와 단절된 곳이라는 느낌을 받았다.
가장 먼저 향한 곳은 송어달중대. 중대는 평소 주간 상황이 발생할 경우 소형전술차량을 활용하고 있다. 산악작전차량이 도입되면서 철책까지 이동하는 시간이 절반 이상 줄었다. 도보로 빠르게 움직여도 30분 이상 걸리던 철책은 이제 15분 정도면 도착할 수 있게 됐다.
통문 앞 고가초소에 오르자 DMZ가 한눈에 들어왔다. 특히 이곳에서는 6·25 전쟁 막바지
중공군의 최후의 공세에 맞서 승리를 거둔 854고지 전투 현장과 그곳에 지어진 초소(GP)도 확인할 수 있었다.
사천리중대로 이동했다. 도로는 험하고 위험했다. 도로포장도 최근의 일이다. 사천리중대는 4000개가 넘는 계단으로 유명하다. 중대 작전지역의 계단 수를 다 더하면 7446개. 차량으로는 도저히 갈 수 없는 험지 곳곳에 초소가 있다. 이 때문에 부식 운반에 모노레일을 사용해 유명해지기도 했다.
악명 높은 철책점검 코스도 사천리중대 장병들에게는 일상이다. 이곳을 방문한 산악인 엄홍길 씨마저 “힘들다”고 했다. 조재훈(대위) 중대장은 “왕복을 해야 하는 철책점검의 특성 상 걸어야 할 계단의 수는 그 두 배가 된다”라며 “지금은 코스를 반으로 나눠 순차적으로 순찰하고 있다”고 설명했다. 그가 가장 중점을 두고 있는 것은 ‘체력’이다. 장병들은 험한 계단을 극복하기 위해 매일 체력 단련을 통해 지구력을 키우고 있다.
다음 행선지인 단결중대는 890고지에 자리 잡고 있다. 한낮임에도 단결중대는 희뿌연 안개에 휩싸여 있었다. 한 치 앞이 겨우 보이는 이런 날씨는 이미 익숙하다고 한다. 장병들은 “맑은 날이 오히려 드물다”고 입을 모았다.
단결중대 장병들은 서로를 존중하고 배려하는 문화를 통해 수많은 어려움을 헤쳐나가고 있다. 전입 5개월차인 박병주 일병은 “낯선 환경과 DMZ가 주는 부담감을 떨쳐내는데 가장 도움이 됐던 것은 다름 아닌 ‘전우’였다”고 밝혔다.
‘12사단의 정체성’이라고 할 수 있는 향로봉으로 향했다. 해발 1296m에 달하는 향로봉으로 가는 길은 시작부터 난관이었다. 거친 비포장도로, 굽이진 난코스, 시계(視界)를 차단하는 극심한 운무와 거센 바람 때문에 중간중간 멈춰 설 수 밖에 없었다. 차량으로 정상에서 3m 아래 있는 선점중대까지 이동시간이 무려 1시간 30분이 넘게 걸렸다.
사단은 이렇게 험한 향로봉을 행군 장소로 활용하고 있다. 훈련병과 신임 장교는 물론 예하 부대 장병들 역시 주기적으로 향로봉을 오르며 산악사단의 기상을 마음에 새긴다.
향로봉 정상은 실제로 향로에 향을 피운 것처럼 운무로 가득했다. 하지만 불어오는 세찬 바람으로 간간이 안개가 걷힐 때면 말 그대로 절경이 펼쳐졌다. 하지만 향로봉 정상에서 바라본 풍경은 장관이었다. 거센 바람과 안개를 뚫고 멀리 푸른 하늘 위로 환한 빛을 내뿜던 태양. 이곳에서만 볼 수 있는 풍경이었다.
