The journey began near the statue of Major Shim Il, located near the base of the ROK Army's 7th Infantry Division. Major Shim distinguished himself in battles such as Chuncheon District Battle, Oksanpo Battle, and Soyang Bridge Battle during the Korean War. He is presumed to have been killed in action during the Yeongwol battle in January 1951.
In Hwacheon County, where the 7th Infantry Division is stationed, there are many memorials and monuments dedicated to these war heroes. These monuments signify that intense battles were fought in this area during the Korean War.
The 7th Infantry Division fought a total of 28 battles during the Korean War, making significant contributions. They led to victory in numerous battles, starting with the Battle of Hill 425, which is recorded as the last victory of the Korean War. These victories changed the course of war.
The next place we visited was the General Outpost (GOP) of the 7th Infantry Division. After crossing the Civilian Control Line and heading far north, we arrived at a small outpost of the GOP battalion. There, the situational response training was in full swing. The soldiers conducted training on response procedures, under the assumption of a situation involving the appearance of defectors.
The DMZ may seem peaceful on the surface, but underneath it's filled with tension. Therefore, soldiers must execute their duties while keeping all possible scenarios in mind.
First Lieutenant Kim Jeong-hyun, who is in charge of the outpost, stated "practical training is crucial for us to be equipped with the ability to fight and win against an enemy. Every drop of sweat we shed will serve as a force protecting the DMZ and safeguarding our nation."
As dusk fell, lights illuminated the barbed wire fence - they were bright LEDs. Surrounding the fence, a variety of state-of-the-art surveillance equipment was in full operation. It became apparent that Korea military forces are vigilantly safeguarding the DMZ amidst this continually evolving environment.
Every soldier guarding the DMZ carries a unique story. Their ages, ranks, and backgrounds differ; so do their reasons for voluntarily choosing to serve on the front lines. However, they all share an unwavering resolve to guard the DMZ and protect Republic of Korea.
Private First Class Lim Dong-jun and Lim Dong-hwan, brothers serving at the General Outpost (GOP) of Army's 7th Infantry Division, follow in their father's footsteps who also served in this very division three decades ago. Now they stand guard over DMZ - an area once guarded by their father. The brothers voiced their conviction saying
"We have never regretted our decision to serve as border guards at GOP and we won't ever regret it."
Sergeant First Class Kim Beom-su, the squad leader of the GOP outpost, holds two military service numbers. He was commissioned as an officer in 2016 and served about four years at a frontline unit. Since last year, he has chosen to serve at the frontline again as a NCO(non-commissioned officer). Sergeant First Class Kim emphasized that "Our troops are outstanding soldiers with a strong determination to accomplish tasks on their own."
Lieutenant Colonel Park Se-young, the commander of GOP battalion, carries a wealth of experience from his long-term service in forward areas. Upon taking command, he pledged to his troops that 'I will not fall into complacency and will cultivate professionalism through proper conviction.' The members of his unit are also following suit by observing and learning from their commander's exemplary leadership.
Lieutenant Colonel Park articulated his conviction by stating, "Regardless of how exceptional our equipment or systems may be, it is ultimately our soldiers who determine the outcome of operations. If I lead by giving my utmost effort as a commander from the outset, our troops will surely follow."

5) 육군7사단 (화천)
이번 여정의 시작은 육군7사단 주둔지 인근에 있는 고(故) 심일 소령 동상이었다. 심 소령은 6·25전쟁 춘천지구전투·옥산포전투·소양교전투 등에서 공적을 세웠고, 1951년 1월 영월전투 중 전사한 것으로 추정된다.
육군7사단이 주둔하는 강원도 화천에는 이러한 전쟁영웅들의 추모비와 전적비가 많다. 이는 6·25전쟁 때 이곳에서 치열한 전투가 벌어졌다는 것을 보여준다.
육군7사단은 6·25전쟁에서 총 28차례 전투를 치러 혁혁한 공을 세웠다. 6·25전쟁의 마지막 승전으로 기록된 425고지전투를 비롯해 영천지구 전투, 평양 탈환전투, 화천지구 전투, 백석산지구 전투, 크리스마스고지 전투 등을 승리로 이끌며 전쟁의 흐름을 바꿨다.
다음으로 찾은 곳은 육군7사단의 일반전초(GOP)였다. 민통선을 지나 한참을 북쪽으로 올라가 도착한 GOP대대의 한 소초에서는 귀순자 상황조치 훈련이 한창이었다.
겉으로는 평화롭고 평온해 보이지만 이면엔 긴장감으로 가득한 곳이 바로 DMZ다. 그래서 장병들은 모든 상황을 염두에 두고 임무를 수행한다.
소초장 김정현 중위는 "당장 적과 싸워 이길 수 있는 능력을 갖추기 위해 가장 중요한 것은 실전적 훈련"이라며 "소초원들의 땀방울 하나하나가 DMZ를 수호하고 나라를 지키는 힘이 될 것"이라고 역설했다.
어느새 날이 저물었다. 밤하늘엔 육군7사단의 상징인 북두칠성이 빛나고 있었다. 어둠이 내리자 철책에 불이 켜졌다. 그런데 불빛이 흰색이었다. 철책 등이 LED 등으로 바뀌었기 때문이다. 철책 등은 노란색일 거라는 생각은 고정관념이었다. 철책 주변에는 각종 첨단 감시장비가 운용되고 있었다. 더욱 진화한 환경에서 국군 장병들이 DMZ를 수호하고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.
비무장지대(DMZ) 일대를 지키는 장병들에게는 저마다의 이야기가 있다. 나이·계급·신분이 다르고, 최전방 배치를 자원한 이유도 다르다. 그러나 DMZ를 수호하고, 대한민국을 지키는 확고한 의지는 모두 같았다.
육군7사단 일반전초(GOP)에서 근무하는 임동준, 임동환 일병은 형제다. 이들의 아버지도 육군7사단 GOP에서 복무했다. 30여 년 전 아버지가 지켰던 DMZ를 이제는 두 아들이 수호하고 있다.
형제는 "GOP 경계병을 선택한 것을 한 번도 후회한 적 없고, 앞으로도 후회하지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.
GOP 소초 분대장 김범수 중사는 두 개의 군번을 갖고 있었다. 그는 지난 2016년 장교로 임관해 최전방 부대에서 약 4년을 근무했고, 지난해 다시 부사관의 길을 선택해 최전방에서 근무하고 있었다.
김 중사는 "우리 부대원들은 스스로 해내려는 강한 의지가 있는 훌륭한 군인들"이라고 강조했다.
GOP 대대장 박세영 중령은 오랜 시간 전방지역에서 임무를 수행한 경험이 있다. 그는 지휘관에 취임하면서 "나태해지지 않고, 올바른 신념으로 전문성을 키우겠다"고 부대원들에게 약속했다. 부대원들 역시 대대장의 솔선수범을 지켜보며 자세를 본받아가고 있다.
박 중령은 "아무리 우수한 장비와 뛰어난 체계가 있더라도 작전의 마침표는 장병들이 찍는다. 나부터 지휘관으로서 최선을 다한다면 부대원들도 따를 것"이라고 자신의 신념을 밝혔다.
