(Daegu Garden Expo)

The 2024 Daegu Garden Expo gets underway this weekend under the theme, “Garden Renaissance of Korea in Powerful Daegu,” with a focus on promoting natural garden culture and encouraging citizens to create and enjoy their own gardens.

This year’s event, held from the 11th to the 15th, aims to be a true citizen-participatory experience with expanded activities and a variety of attractions.

The expo has significantly increased the number of participatory gardens, featuring contributions from students, citizens, families, and businesses. A total of 108 gardens are on display, including 20 student gardens, 20 citizen gardens, 12 corporate gardens, 7 district/county theme gardens, and 40 “Our Family Gardens,” created as part of a pre-event initiative.

The Garden Industry Fair showcases and sells rare plants, new horticultural varieties, and trendy garden supplies from 40 companies. To enhance the experience, a Big Shop Garden is set up, displaying signature plants and garden accessories from participating vendors.

Additionally, the event offers a food zone featuring selected vendors serving coffee, flower tea, and other light refreshments. Performances take place daily at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., with special magic and bubble shows on weekends for families and busking performances on weekdays.

For hands-on experiences, the expo provides interactive programs like mini topiary-making, crafting sotdae flowerpots, and cypress workshops. Visitors can also participate in a garden stamp tour, an SNS event, and surveys to win small souvenirs.

The event also includes themed gardens like the Rose Garden and the new Pumpkin Garden to capture the essence of autumn. Various photo zones are spread throughout Hajungdo Island, including spots near the cosmos fields, water reeds, and kudzu groves.

This year, the expo has enhanced its visitor facilities, adding 90 shaded seating areas and increasing main stage capacity to accommodate up to 300 people. To handle weekend crowds, the Joya Branch School Stadium has been secured as an additional parking lot. A new floating bridge, spanning 110 meters, now connects Nogok Sports Park to Hajungdo Island, making access easier.

Shuttle bus services have been expanded for smoother visitor flow. Buses now run every 15 minutes from Manpyeong Station on Line 3 to Hajungdo from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., with return trips from 5 p.m. to 6. p.m. On weekends, shuttles to Joya Branch School are available at the same intervals.

The expo officially will open on October 11th with a ceremony attended by Daegu Mayor Hong Joon-pyo, garden participants, and local residents.

The event also features activities for children and families, including a “My Garden Drawn in a Tent” event for kindergarten students and a “Our Family Garden Creation” program for families.
