This is the scenery surrounding the 'White Skull' Observation Post (OP). ()

The In the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) of Cheorwon, you can find the 'white Skull(白骨)' symbol in various places. It is the emblem of the ROK Army's 3rd Division, known as the White Skull unit.
Since its establishment, the 3rd Division has never been defeated in over 150 battles. During the Korean War in November 1950, it was among the first of ROK military forces to enter Hyesanjin in North Korea.
The soldiers of the White Skull unit were performing border operations more solidly than ever before. This was thanks to devices such as Thermal Observation Devices (TOD), Closed Circuit TVs (CCTV), and equipment capable of detecting even the slightest movement in the barbed wire.
First, I visited the site of the DMZ search operation. Soldiers armed with personal firearms and equipped with various equipment such as mine detectors and radios were waiting for deployment. The expressions on the faces of soldiers who received ammunition magazines filled with live rounds were serious.
First Lieutenant Kim Yeon-woong, the team leader, said this: 'The moment we become complacent can put everyone in danger. It's a chilling thought when you consider scenarios where a mine could explode or when enemy artillery shells could come our way. We strive not to get caught up in similar environments and operations.'
The search battalion is always deployed in the DMZ despite the risks, to check for anomalies and prepare accordingly. Given that real combat could break out at any time, they are well-versed in response tactics and take every precaution to prevent accidents during operations. This is because even a mistake can give our adversaries an excuse for provocation.
At the same moment, a tense, realistic training session began at the search battalion's training ground. The training field, laden with various obstacles, had become so frozen from the ongoing chill that it was challenging even to set foot on it. The grass had also frozen solid and felt sharply pointed whenever trodden upon.
Yet despite these conditions, the soldiers committed themselves wholeheartedly to their training. Sergeant First Class Park Dae-woon who led the exercise explained: 'We conduct repetitive daily drills in order to familiarize ourselves in advance with staged overcoming strategies and tactical maneuvers.'
The training concluded with firing exercises using K3 machine guns and K1 submachine guns. Despite temperatures remaining below freezing even at high noon, sweat trickled down soldiers' foreheads, a testament to the intensity of their training.
Seventy years ago, battles between life and death were fought here in the DMZ. Today, a new generation of soldiers prepares themselves through rigorous training.
Sergeant First Class An Se-hyun said, "When I think about how it's thanks to the sacrifices of our predecessors that I'm able to be here today, it keeps me on high alert," he continued, "I constantly vow to risk my own life in order to honor their legacy."

6) 육군3사단 (철원)
철원의 비무장지대(DMZ)에는 백골(白骨) 문양을 곳곳에서 발견할 수 있다. 이 일대를 방호하는 육군3사단, 백골부대의 상징이다.
3사단은 창설 이래 150여 회의 전투에서 한 번도 패하지 않았다. 6·25전쟁 당시인 1950년 11월에는 북한 혜산진에 국군 최선봉으로 입성하기도 했다.
백골부대 장병들은 과거보다 더욱 견고하게 경계작전을 수행하고 있었다. 열상감시장비(TOD)와 폐쇄회로TV(CCTV), 철책의 작은 움직임까지 감지하는 장치들 덕분이다.
먼저, DMZ 수색작전 현장을 찾았다. 개인화기로 무장하고, 지뢰탐지기와 통신기 등 각종 장비를 갖춘 장병들이 작전 투입을 기다리고 있었다. 실탄이 든 탄알집을 받은 장병들의 표정은 비장했다.
팀장을 맡은 김연웅 중위는 이렇게 말했다. "매너리즘에 빠지는 순간 모두가 위험해집니다. 지뢰가 폭발하거나 적의 고사포탄이 날아오는 상황을 생각하면 섬뜩합니다. 비슷한 환경과 작전에 매몰되지 않으려고 노력합니다."
수색대대가 위험을 무릅쓰고 늘 DMZ에 투입되는 건 특이사항을 확인하고 대비하기 위해서다. 언제 실전이 벌어질지 모르는 만큼 대응법을 숙달하고, 작전 중 오발사고 방지에도 만전을 기하고 있었다. 우리는 실수였다 해도 적에게 도발의 빌미를 줘서는 안 되기 때문이다.
같은 시각, 수색대대 훈련장에서는 실전 같은 긴장감 속에 훈련의 막이 올랐다. 여러 장애물이 설치된 훈련장은 계속된 추위로 땅이 얼어 한 발 내딛기도 어려웠다. 풀마저 얼어붙어 밟으면 뾰족하게 느껴질 정도였다.
그런데도 장병들은 아랑곳하지 않고 훈련을 위해 몸을 던졌다. 훈련을 이끈 박대운 중사는 "단계별 극복방법과 전술 행동을 미리 익혀 놓기 위해 매일 반복 훈련한다"고 설명했다.
훈련은 K3 기관총과 K1 기관단총 사격훈련으로 마무리됐다. 해가 중천에 뜬 낮까지 영하의 온도를 기록했지만, 장병들의 이마에 땀이 맺힐 정도로 강도 높은 훈련이었다.
70년 전 이곳 DMZ에서는 생사가 오가는 전투가 펼쳐졌다. 지금은 후배 장병들이 철저한 훈련을 바탕으로 대비태세를 갖추고 있었다.
백골부대 안세현 중사는 "선배 전우의 희생 덕분에 나도 지금 이곳에 있다고 생각하면 긴장을 늦출 수 없다"며 "그분들의 뜻을 받들어 목숨을 걸고 지켜내겠다고 늘 다짐한다"고 말했다.
